Top 5 Tips for Future Pilots: What You Need to Know Before Your First Lesson

Embarking on your journey to become a pilot is an exciting adventure filled with new experiences, challenges, and rewards. Your first flight lesson marks the beginning of this journey, and while it’s natural to feel a mix of excitement and nerves, being well-prepared can make a world of difference. Here are the top five tips to help you get the most out of your first flying lesson and set yourself up for success.

1. Get Familiar with the Basics of Aviation
Before you step into the cockpit, it's helpful to have a basic understanding of how airplanes work and the principles of flight. Spend some time reading up on the four forces of flight (lift, weight, thrust, and drag), as well as the primary flight controls (ailerons, elevators, and rudder). Understanding these concepts will make it easier to follow along with your instructor and grasp what’s happening during your lesson. If you would like to prepare, you can also purchase an online ground school to help get ahead of the aircraft.

2. Dress Comfortably and Appropriately
Comfort is key when you’re flying. Wear light, breathable clothing and avoid anything too tight or restrictive. Closed-toe shoes with good grip are recommended, as you’ll be using your feet to operate the rudder pedals. Since the cockpit can get warm, especially in summer, it’s a good idea to bring a pair of sunglasses and a hat to shield your eyes from the sun. A water bottle is also handy to stay hydrated. And I dont know about you, but the sun is a factor in more ways than the bright light, so be sure to put on sunscreen before your flight as well.

3. Come Prepared to Listen and Learn
Your first lesson will be packed with new information, so it’s important to arrive with a mindset of listening and learning. Your instructor will guide you through each step, from pre-flight checks to basic maneuvers. Don’t hesitate to ask questions—no matter how simple they may seem. Every pilot was once a beginner, and your instructor is there to help you build a strong foundation of knowledge and skills.

4. Take Notes and Review Afterward
Bring a notepad and pen, or use your phone to jot down key points during your lesson. After your flight, take some time to review what you’ve learned. Replaying the lesson in your mind or going over your notes can help reinforce your understanding and prepare you for your next flight. Many student pilots find it helpful to keep a flight training journal to track their progress and reflect on what they’ve learned.

5. Stay Relaxed and Focus On The Now
It’s natural to feel a bit nervous before your first lesson, but try to stay relaxed and enjoy the experience. Remember, your instructor is there to ensure your safety and guide you every step of the way. Focus on the incredible opportunity you have to learn to fly, and don’t put too much pressure on yourself to perform perfectly. The most important thing is to have fun and soak in the experience of flying for the first time. Many times students will worry about their next certificate they are going to do. Worry about today and focus on how to make today the best learning experience.
